Digital News Transformation Fund Phase 1 Adjudication Update

Johannesburg, South Africa – 16 March 2026

The Digital News Transformation Fund (DNTF) confirms that Phase 1 adjudication for the current funding round has concluded.

The call received strong interest from across South Africa’s independent news sector, with a total of 133 applications submitted. Of these, 18 were for the new Ignite category, introduced following insights from the first funding round. The Ignite tier is designed to support publishers looking to establish a foundational digital presence. Following review by the independent Adjudication Committee, 69 applicants will be invited to progress to Phase 2 of the process.

The Phase 1 process was designed as a light-touch entry point, allowing applicants to outline their proposed projects without the need for supporting documentation. Applications were assessed by the Adjudication Committee against the Fund’s eligibility and strategic criteria.

Phase 2 of the application process is by invitation only and will open on 23 March 2026.

Applicants invited to Phase 2 will be required to submit full proposals with detailed information about their organisations and projects. This includes project plans, budgets, and supporting documentation such as proof of registration, tax compliance documentation, and relevant financial records.

All applicants will receive feedback on the outcome of their Phase 1 submission by close of business on Friday 20 March 2026. Applicants selected to progress will receive direct communication with detailed guidance on the Phase 2 requirements and submission process.

The two-phase application model is designed to reduce barriers to entry while maintaining a rigorous and independent assessment process.
