The Digital News Transformation Fund has released its half-year impact report for Cohort 1, covering January to June 2026. The report details how the first round of grant funding supported 21 independent South African newsrooms to build digital tools, skills and revenue streams. This resulted in 300 published stories, more than 65 trained journalists and media staff, and various new website builds for grantees. The report also examines the sector’s ongoing challenges, such as financial sustainability, staff capacity and governance gaps, outlining the priorities that will guide the Fund’s work through the remainder of 2026.
